Curriculum Overview
2022 to 2023
Class 3 is a mixed year group class, hosting Year 2 and Year 3 children. We are an extremely creative class who love to explore the national curriculum and connect our ideas and activities, as per our school drivers (explore, create, connect).
In English this half term, we will be looking at writing our own persuasive text and will be studying the author Oliver Jeffers. Writing is taught using the Talk for Writing approach. We learn texts off by heart using actions and story maps. We then apply taught grammar and amend the text, creating our own versions.
We love to read in Class 3. High quality texts are read to the class every day and reading is taught through decoding, prosody and comprehension lessons. We read to improve fluency, expand our vocabulary and to improve our comprehension. Most importantly, however, we read for enjoyment! Our expectation is that children read their colour band books at least 3 times a week at home. In addition to a colour band book, children are given the opportunity to choose a library book. This is totally their choice and can be read either independently or with your support. Children have the opportunity to change their library book on a Wednesday and their colour band book on a Monday and Thursday.
In Mathematics, we will be continuing continuing fractions and then moving onto money and time. Year 2 will be looking at fractions and time. Maths is taught using White Rose, a comprehensive scheme which covers both fluency and reasoning and problem solving. We also use Times Table Rockstars (TTRS) with a battle taking place each week. I love it when we win!
We are going to focus on scientific skills this half term and will be exploring light and shadow. We will be undertaking lots of scientific investigations.
In order to further promote physical activity and wellbeing, children have 2 PE lessons a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. This half term, the Year 3’s will be going swimming and the Year 2’s will be taking part in team games. The whole class will also be taking part in athletics.
The children will also need old trainers or wellies and long trousers to bring into school for when we go outdoors for learning. Outdoor learning for Class 3 is on Wednesday this term.
Google classroom will remain as a means of communication with homework projects being set on there. This half term, there is a focus on children learning their spellings and times tables.
